The Bible speaks about the church as a family. Healthy families live life together through the good times and the bad. They care for one another. They support one another. They are involved in each other’s lives beyond an hour on a Sunday.
For those of us with an independent streak, this means that we don’t live life alone. Our independence is being transformed into a godly interdependence with others. We’ve been designed by God for this - for community, for life together. It’s the only way to truly live.
And for those us us who are lonely, this is great news. It means that we are given a community in which to belong, where we can know and be known.
We recognize that it takes time to become a family, that people need time and space to get comfortable with others, and that we often fall short of God’s design in this regard. But we always want to be moving toward the kind of family that is possible under Jesus, where true connection and healthy relationships overcome the all-too-common isolation and alienation that many of us frequently experience in our world.
