The Songbook of God's People

Summer Sermon Series (July & August)

The Psalms are a collection of songs that have become the prayer book of God's people. They plumb the depths of despair (e.g. Ps 88) and reach the heights of praise (e.g. Ps 96). Ranging across the whole spectrum of human experience, they give us language for every occasion. Faith is encouraged, praise commanded, lament endorsed, desire directed, wickedness rebuked, righteousness praised, trust blessed. They are thoroughly human - we can connect with this language and these experiences - and at the same time they are thoroughly faith-filled - faith in the God who made us and who rules the world and who has pledged himself to his people permeates the Psalms. The Psalms teach us how to pray. They teach us how to take up all of life and bring it before God. The Psalms form us spiritually. They show us the inside of the heart that longs for God, even in it's most difficult moments. As we take up the Psalms in our preaching at Church of the Cross this summer, we expect to learn much about the character of God, the nature of faith, the way to pray, and the path for growing up in Christ.
