Mission is God’s idea, not ours. God reached out to his world. God took the initiative and came to our rescue in a sacrificial and costly way. As his redeemed family, we are now the vehicle through which God’s mission continues on earth.
This means that our lives are not meant to be spent on ourselves. We are all prone to selfishness, but Jesus called his disciples to take up their cross and follow him. That means unselfishness. That means sacrificial love. And instead of diminishing life, we believe that giving our lives away for the sake of others actually makes us more fully alive. God designed us this way, and he has given us his Spirit to empower us to this kind of unselfish life.
As a community, we are committed to God’s mission in the world. This includes ministries of justice and mercy, a commitment to reclaiming the arts, and simply practicing the art of being a good neighbor. We also have a concern for issues around the world.
While mission is from God, we believe that the particular missions of the church arise out of the people of the church. Therefore we seek to discover and respond to the burdens and passions that God has placed upon the hearts of his people who call Church of the Cross their family.
