Summer Interest Groups
We do Summer Interest Groups because the pace of life at CotC changes during the summer, and many of our neighborhood groups take a break from their weekly meetings. These groups keep building community through the summer. Each group has a special focus which can be about growing spiritually, serving others, or just having fun. Anyone is free to join any group! They start around June 7th, and go for nine weeks (till around August 9th). We have six groups. Read the blurbs below to find out about the groups, and email the leader of the group or groups that interest you the most! The groups are:
Zumba on the Esplanade – Elise H – audreyeliseh[at]gmail.com
This group is for everyone who wants to stay fit this summer and have some fun while doing it. Have you tried Zumba? There are free Zumba classes on the esplanade this summer (sponsored by Healthworks and the Esplanade Association). Apparently there are also free snacks. So…let’s move! Everyone is welcome (not just for ladies). We’ll meet Tuesdays at 5:45pm (class starts at 6pm), starting July 14 at the Hatch Shell on the Charles River Esplanade. **Please register on the Esplanade Association website: http://www.esplanadeassociation.org/what-we-do/programs/healthy-fit-and-fun/
Join us this summer as we attend public readings and literary events, meet over drinks to discuss poems and short fiction pieces, and simply enjoy the company of like-minded folks. Daniel Leonard and Catherine Con, MFAers from Boston University, will serve as event finders/discussion leaders/hangers-out-in-chief. This group will meet roughly once a week, with time and location depending on the availability of public events. You won’t want to miss it!
Friends Exploring Nature – Ryland L – fill out this form: tinyurl.com/explorenature
Friends Exploring Nature: Join our group if you want to explore the outdoors together with other COTCers! Depending on interest, we’ll do day hikes on the beautiful hills around Boston, visit city green spaces (like the arboretum and Mt. Auburn Cemetery), go boating on the Charles, or something more involved like a multi-day canoe trip. No prior outdoors experience necessary: come if you want to enjoy nature, like to meet people, or grab a cold drink with friends after hiking in the hot weather.
Reading about Friendship – Jonathan B – jbailes1[at]samford.edu
Do you enjoy lively conversation over a good book? Are you interested in what it means to experience real friendship? If both of these apply to you, then join my summer interest group! We will be considering the topic of friendship from a Christian perspective through an engagement with three authors: Aelred of Rivaulx, C.S. Lewis, and Wesley Hill. We will meet four or five times over the summer, each time discussing between 40 and 70 pages of reading. Times and location TBA.
Wayland Escapes – Lisa and Jason P – lisapuckett508[at]gmail.com
We plan to come together on Wednesdays, offering evenings in the ‘burbs with a lakeside picnic, beach, volleyball, basketball, kayaking, canoeing, sailing, and campfire (bring your instruments) or woodsy hike.
Music Group – Ryan R and Cambria B – ryan.ruffing[at]gmail.com, cambriabold[at]gmail.com
Do you sing or play an instrument? Would you like to hang out with other musicians this summer and make music in a relaxed environment? We’ll be meeting regularly to jam and get to know each other, and would love to have you join us!
Reach out to a leader (or a few), and happy Summer!
