Children’s Ministry at CotC

“These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.””
— Deuteronomy 6:6-7

Mission

Our mission is three-fold:

  • to come alongside parents in instructing children with gospel-centered teaching

  • to build community among the children

  • to include children in intergenerational worship

with the goal that they might never know a day apart from Christ.

What to Expect

Nursery Care
Nursery care is available for children who can sit up independently and are under 3. Our nursery is located on the second floor, and parents can sign children in before the service (as early as 10:15) and should pick them up at the passing of the peace (approx. 11:35). You can find more information about child safety in our handbook HERE.

Sunday School
Though check-in for families is from 10:00-10:30 prior to the service, our time together begins after the prayer for children. Children enter Powery Hall and are checked in by their teachers. During the passing of the peace, after the prayers and confession, parents should pick up their children with the check-out code printed for them during check-in.

After a time of singing together, children head off into one of four classes:

  • Scramblers (ages 2.5-4)

  • Climbers (ages 4-6)

  • Explorers (grades 1-2)

  • Mountaineers (grades 3-6)

In these groups, children sing songs, learn stories from the Bible, and respond to the stories. Each element works together to point them to Christ and His gospel.

You can find more information about our Sunday School program here.

  • Church, and Sunday School in particular, should be a fun, safe place children look forward to going. Our children’s ministry volunteers have undergone a thorough screening process including an application, background checks, reference checks, sexual abuse awareness training, and a basic attendance requirement (6 months). There will always be two adults with any class or child at a time. Our floating volunteer (hall monitor) rotates throughout the classrooms and Sunday School space to ensure our safety standards are being met. They are also responsible for contacting the director and/or parents if a need arises. Additionally, all children and families participate in our secure check-in/check-out name tag system

  • Our Scramblers and Climbers classes use God’s Big Story, a Bible-based curriculum out of the Anglican Network in Canada. Each lesson includes a memory verse, a story told with visuals, wondering questions for discussion, prayer, and some form of response (playdough, coloring, a craft, game, etc).

Our Explorers and Mountaineers classes use the Jesus Storybook Bible curriculum based on Sally Lloyd-Jones’ children’s Bible by the same name. This curriculum moves chronologically throughout scripture and includes an activator game, memory verse, story, and response.

  • Every child is welcome to join our Sunday School classes! If you have specific concerns or if your child has specific needs, please reach out to our Director of Children’s Ministry, Sara Williams at sara@cotcboston.org.

  • Right now we are focusing on our Sunday morning program for children and building the ministry in other ways, however we are hoping to begin programs such as this in the future! Youth Ministry

Our youth are a vital part of our church and we hope they will participate in the full life of the church during their time in middle and high school. On Sunday mornings, they take part in the liturgy and listen to teaching alongside the rest of the congregation. We believe that having multiple trusted adults invest in a young person during these formative years helps faith last a lifetime. As such, we carefully pair up each of our youth with an individual mentor from the congregation who, through social events such as picking up an ice cream or going to a sports game together, aim to get to know their mentee and help them along in their walk with Jesus. Additionally, we want youth to have both an intergenerational community and a community of peers seeking to follow Jesus. We host youth specific pre-service Bible studies and fun events to help develop those peer relationships.
