“How much fruit is being produced in my life?”
“Does my life prove to the world that I am Christ’s disciple?”
“Do I love others in the same manner that Christ loves me?”
Yikes! Reflecting on John 15 led to major feelings of inadequacy. In asking myself these questions, I was overwhelmed by how much I fall short. Then I remembered all I am is a branch. I am not the Vine. And oh how I need the Vine. Apart from Christ I can do nothing. Nothing. Apart from Him, my life is fruitless. Without His power at work within me, I am no different from others in this world. On my own, I am completely incapable of loving people in a manner that reflects the Gospel.
There is freedom in the reality that God knew that apart from Him we could do nothing, yet He still chose us and appointed us to bear fruit. God’s glory in our lives, the fruit we bear, the way we love others, is solely a testament of His power at work within us. He is the Vine. We are simply the branches.
“Now to Him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us, to Him be the glory.” –Ephesians 3.20
I live in Back Bay with my husband Carson. Although Boston feels more and more like home to us, people still comment on our southern accents almost daily.
